Parshas Nitzavim – Vayelech (5762)
by Mordechai Dolinsky

We reach the last lap of the year with our final week of preparation for Rosh HaShana. The opening words of the parsha are relevant and inspiring in an awesome way. “Atem Nitzavim HaYom ….. lifnei Hashem”.

Our main service on Rosh Hashana is to focus on the Kingdom of Hashem and the absolute submission to His rule. We are living in an era that the vision of the reality of the presence of Hashem in the world is hazy and foggy. “Atem nitzavim…lifnei….” Let’s use this week for the opportunity to lift this fog and to toil in getting ourselves to actually feel that we are standing before Hashem.

Rosh Hashana is the opportunity to bring correction, an absolute straightening and rectification for anything that needs salvation, for ourselves, our families, Clal Yisroel and the world. “Vayelech”—we shall go on and see this fulfillment.

Have a wonderful Shabbos and a wonderful year for all.

Parshas Ki Savo (5762)
By Mordechai Dolinsky

As we grow closer to Rosh Hashana we can see the Hashgacha Pratis in the relevance of the parshas hashavua to the vibes of the times. The greatest foundation of our Torah and relationship to Hashem is gratitude which is so clearly pronounced in our Sedra. The essence of our bond to Hashem is that He is our best friend. During this period of Elul when the main focus on Hashem is His kingship and sovereignty over the universe it is especially essential to likewise bear in mind the constant display of love, concern and devotion Hashem bestows upon us. In this perspective it is clear what Hillel claimed was THE MOST IMPORTANT DICTUM IN THE TORAH was not to do to your friend what is objectionable to you, and that “friend” Rashi explains is Hashem.

The mitzvah of the blowing of the shofar has an awesome influence over the determination of the events for the coming year. It is crucial and critical to prepare adequately and accordingly. Familiarize yourself with the halachic significance of the various sounds by learning the halachic structure and framework. Broaden your insight to the spiritual significance of the blowing by studying, for example, the ten reasons for blowing listed by R’ Saadia Gaon which can be found in many ‘machzorim’. Also….

Have a wonderful (Shabbos) week and an even more wonderful year.

Parshas Chukas (5762)
By Mordechai Dolinsky

In this week’s parsha we have the vital and significant incident of Moshe Rabeinu and the rock.  The following is a structure of the sequence that emerges from the psukim according to Rashi.

The petirah of Miriam HaNevia

The be’er ceases to give water and goes away

This cuts off the source of water for Clal Yisroel

(The sequence of the following items is not clear)

HaShem gave the command to Moshe Rabeinu to speak to the  special rock in order to extract water for Clal Yisroel

Because the be’er went away the special rock likewise followed its example and stationed itself incognito among the other stones

An ordinary stone positioned itself in the place of the special stone

The multitudes of Clal Yisroel miraculously stationed themselves in positions whereby they were able to observe the stone

Clal Yisroel realized that this was not the special stone but could not identify the special stone because of its incognito position

Clal Yisroel  adopted the position that the procedure of speaking to the stone should be done to the ordinary stone that was sitting in the place of the special stone

Moshe Rabeinu disagreed with Clal Yisroel and criticized them for taking an unqualified stand on the issue and it is at this point Rashi explains that this is the significance of Moshe Rabeinu’s statement (20:2) “Shimu Nah HaMorim”

Moshe Rabeinu nevertheless proceeded to speak to the wrong stone

It produced no results

Because of the failure it was decided to hit the stone instead

At this point the special stone returned to its original position

Moshe Rabeinu proceeded with his above decision and hit the stone (it is not clear whether Moshe Rabeinu was cognizant of the fact that the special stone had returned to its original position)

A small amount of water emerged

Moshe again repeated the process and hit the stone

This time an abundance of water which was sufficient for all of Clal Yisroel and their flocks emerged.

The following questions emerge from all the above.

Why did the special stone go away?

Why was Bnei Yisroel of the opinion to proceed with the strange stone?

Why did Moshe give in and agree to speak to the strange stone?

When this failed why did Moshe opt for hitting the stone instead of using it as a demonstration that it was wrong to proceed with the strange stone?

Why did he actually hit the stone when HaShem had told him specifically to talk to it?

Why did the special stone return at this point?

Why did the special stone give water when it wasn’t supposed to do so when hit, only when spoken to?

What was Moshe Rabeinu’s actual transgression, since he did attempt to speak to the stone but it didn’t work?

With a new approach in understanding the whole episode of Moshe Rabeinu talking to the stone we can perhaps have way to solve these difficulties. The conventional perspective of deriving water from a stone is of kabalistic, metaphysical significance.  Perhaps we can add that even more significant was the involvement and the input of the personal ‘avoda’ of Moshe Rabeinu and Clal Yisroel in the area of emuna and bitachon, their level of faith and confidence they had in Hashem.  We shouldn’t forget and overlook the fact that the “special rock” definitely did have some aspect of intrinsic significance and input enabling it to access the water.  Likewise the miracles of the ten plagues and the splitting of the sea were closely connected with the avoda of emuna and bitachon of Moshe Rabeinu and Clal Yisroel.  This was also true regarding the miraculous supply of water all the years in the desert which was brought about with the involvement of the avoda of Miriam and the level of emuna of Clal Yisroel.

After the passing away of Miriam the be’er ceased to produce water and left.  The special stone feared that Clal Yisroel was no longer on the level of bitachon that they merited that it would miraculously produce water despite the command of Hashem to Moshe Rabeinu.  The stone suspected that a major chilul Hashem would ensue and it would be more beneficial for it to hide thus disenabling Moshe Rabeinu to proceed.  The stone was sure that Moshe would not attempt to perform on a different stone and thus no chilul Hashem would result and Hashem would supply the water from some alternate source.  This is exactly what transpired–Moshe Rabeinu refused.  Clal Yisroel, however, insisted that they and Moshe Rabeinu were indeed on a high level of emuna and the water could be accessed even from a strange stone, which is technically correct and possible, if they were truly on this high level.  “Mi Sheomar L’Shemen V’yadlik Yomar L’Chometz V’yadlik”—He who created the oil with the power to ignite can likewise ignite vinegar.

When the special stone saw that instead of abstaining and declining to act, Moshe Rabeinu used the ordinary stone and was not successful.  It realized its grave error and returned to its place without Moshe or Clal Yisroel being aware of its act.  Moshe Rabeinu then reasoned, and correctly so, that since this was not the Divinely prescribed procedure since it was being done (so he thought) on the ordinary stone he was likewise able to improvise and attempt the hitting of the stone.  This is known as an increase in ‘hishtadlus’ which compensates when there is a lack of bitachon.

If Moshe Rabeinu had realized that the special stone had returned he would have attempted to speak and he probably would have been successful.  If Clal Yisroel had sufficient bitachon that even the ordinary stone worked with hitting then the special stone would have certainly worked with speaking.

(We can perhaps conjecture and say that the special stone in hoping that it would be noticed and as a means of attracting attention first produced the small amount of water that it did.  Upon seeing that this didn’t work, the second time it produced the full amount).

A clear possible explanation of the sin, the shortcoming of Moshe Rabeinu emerges from this.  Moshe Rabeinu perhaps should have been more scrupulous in suspecting that the special stone returned whereupon it would have been indeed sufficient for him just to speak.  This can be the explanation of the complaint that Moshe didn’t “speak”.  The original commandment and the ultimate Kiddush Hashem would have then come about.

We should all be worthy of making a Kiddush Hashem in the world.  Have a wonderful Shabbos.

Parshas Shoftim – Ki Saitzai – Elul (5762)
By Mordechai Dolinsky

The parsha of Ki Saitzai begins and ends with going out to war. The greatest and most significant battle we have is with the yetzer hara which encompasses every area of avodas HaShem and accounts for the tremendous variety and range of mitzvos our sedra contains.

Parshas Shoftim contains the imposing of authority over the people with a “stick and strap”. This represents the exterior motivation and incentive. This is the time of year that we harness the Shoftim aspect of our personality and character by making self-imposed restrictions and taking upon ourselves stringencies. Besides the concept of tshuva another concept explaining this Elul mentality is that we have special Divine assistance to free us from being bound by the heavy chains of the yetzer hara manifested in consistent transgressions or constant lack of ability to actuate the reality of true fulfillment of the mitzvos. The strength and the ability to accomplish this in Elul is the special closeness that Hashem makes available to us, expressed so beautifully in “Ani Ledodi V’dodi Li”.

Have a wonderful Shabbos and a successful Elul.

By Mordechai Dolinsky

This is the week of mivorchim chodesh Elul. Rav Miller zt”l always related to us that in the market places of Jewish communities one was able to perceive the fear of yamim noraim. On the Shabbos of mevorchim hachodesh we receive a blessing for the month. And this month we receive a blessing for Rosh Hashana and subsequently for the whole year. We now can begin to understand the importance of this Shabbos.

The name of the parsha very significantly is Re’ey—to see. There are multitudes of matters that we can actually “see” but we have to be inspired to search and find.

Have a good search, a good Shabbos and a good year.

Parshas Eikev (5762)
By Mordechai Dolinsky

The period we are now going through following the mourning of the destruction of the Bais HaMikdash is a very special time. It is a time for great inspiration for rebuilding and searching for spiritual breaches that need to be rectified. We are presently given special Divine assistance and gifts to accomplish this. The July-August vacation syndrome and the post Tisha B’Av until Elul slot for others, dampens the spiritual reality of this precious time. How terribly unfortunate! One can easily see how the parshios of the Torah that we have these precious weeks that deal with all the basic foundations of our faith confirm this rebuilding concept.

There is a beautiful Medrash in our sedra (2:37) that says that we can fortify our faith in Hashem’s loyalty to us from great acts of outstanding humans. Some would explain this by saying that if a human can be so loyal and lofty surely Hashem can. I would venture to say that at times we can see much marvelous virtues in a human which can only be explained by saying that we are witnessing the Divine soul planted within us.

We are living in a very low, corrupt, perverted culture and society. Let’s use the Divinity within us to rise above it.

Have a wonderful Shabbos.

Parshas Voeschanan (5762)
By Mordechai Dolinsky

In our parsha (6:4) we have a foundation of our whole faith and everything we stand for crystallized in a statement which was on the lips of multitudes of our brethren as they gave their lives for the glory of Hashem—”Shma Yisroel”. You would think that it deserves the utmost of fanfare, the epitome of spotlight and attention, the declaration of the foundation of foundations of our nation. The awesome lesson is that the kernel of truth, the greatest declaration of our belief is mentioned without the slightest hint of its awesome significance. The lesson is that the greatest truths are hidden. Shma Yisroel should be given a parsha for itself. “Alma DiShikra”—the world of hidden truth. Anyone so inspired to find the truth and devoted to finding the essence of our existence must disengage himself from popular mentality and search, and beg Hashem to show him the truth. This is the beginning of rectifying the Churban.

Have a wonderful Shabbos.

Parshas Yisro 5761

Parshas Yisro 5761
By Mordechai Dolinsky
Yisro truly made a major contribution to Klal Yisroel, with his suggestion of an elaborate system of poiskim and morei hora’ah. One of the reasons he was named Yisro, was to commemorate this great act. A great difficulty is that his idea was such an obviously needed innovation. Why didn’t it occur to Moshe Rabeinu or to anyone else?
This matter of psak, determining the halacha is much more complex than what it seems on the surface. It is not just an issue of intellect and information as we find in the secular sense. There is a unique divine guidance that is “showered” on the posek, which he acquires through an intensive connection with Hashem.
Moshe Rabeinu knew that he was blessed with this unique framework and was instructed by Hashem to carry out this holy task as the morei hora’ah. How can he take the responsibility to delegate this awesome position, duty, and role. Now the obvious question arises; Where did Yisro get the insight that it was proper to propose this.
In the field of free will, and the area of understanding that the purpose of our existence is to be tested in the fulfillment of the will of Hashem, there is a very basic question. How are we to view acheinu bnei yisroel, our fellow Jews, which are born in locations that are far removed from any exposure to a Torah connection.  How can they be tested and held responsible? How do we understand their purpose of existence to be fulfilled?
For an explanation to this we must turn to one of the most important principles. Hashem our creator maintains a constant connection with every individual and is aware of their inner most thoughts and feelings. This individual, despite that he was born so far away, yet he still has the capacity to search and find Hashem; “where does this food come from, …my clothing, …my awesome body? Hashem where are you”? These thoughts might be for a fleeting second but they are very real and sincere.
The divine wheels of hasgacha pratis are then put into motion. Our far removed person from Torah is then  riding a bus on a business trip. A stranger (Rabbi) sitting besides him has just the right personality, and chemistry, and enlightens him. Indeed, this is a heavenly angel. Our friend has been given the tools, to work his way forward – to Torah. Hashem sends his sheluchim.
This very important foundation is reflected in a midrash on our sedra (27,2) “ Hashem said to Moshe, I am the one who has spoken and through my words has created the world. I am the one who draws one close or repels them. I am the one who drew Yisro close…”
Yisro was a recipient of this magnificent gift from Hashem. He was drawn close by the hand of Hashem threw his sheluchim, and had a tremendous clarity in this attribute of Hashem sending His messengers. It was this clarity that enabled Yisro to have the unique insight that Hashem can send his sheluchim to assist Moshe Rabeinu, and set up a complex of morei hora’ah.
Hashem, draw us near to you.
Have a wonderful Shabbos

Our sedra Devorim is one of rebuke and the period of time over the mourning of the churban is also a time of rebuke. This is a period that inspires us to teshuva.

Our greatest yearning and prayer to Hashem is that He should reveal to us what His will is and that we should have the strength to fulfill it.

As we are living through the time of the darkest point of the galus we should also be worthy to see speedily in our days the redemption.

Have a wonderful Shabbos.

Parshas Matos – Masai (5762)
by Mordechai Dolinsky

The Medrash in this weeks’ parsha brings a Chazal that reflects a basic foundation that is related to almost areas of our avodas Hashem and is likewise specifically related to the present “bain Hametzorim” (22:1). If one devotes himself to Torah and Mitzvos he will be exempt from his worldly obligations. Many would understand this as a type of reward however getting to the root it is related to the principle seen from the episode when R’ Akiva was jailed for publicly teaching Torah and his nephew after criticizing his uncle, was likewise imprisoned for political reasons and declared: Lucky are you that was imprisoned for Torah. It was Divinely decreed for us both to be imprisoned. Lucky are you who fulfilled this obligation through Torah. Getting back to our Medrash if one is destined to sweat and toil lucky is the one to fulfill this Divine decree in Torah.

A certain amount of sadness is decreed—lucky is the one who fulfills this through his mourning over the Churban.

We are living and experiencing the extreme darkness of the galus and we should be zocheh to see the redemption speedily in our days.

Have a wonderful Shabbos.
