Parshas Bechukosai (5765)

Rashi explains at the beginning of our parsha what is required of us for which the reward and punishment is laid out.  It is an absolute commitment to extreme toiling in studying and understanding our Torah.  This is expected of all Clal Yisrael from the greatest scholars to the simplist among us.  How much effort much be invested for this to be implanted in us in order to realized in a practical actuality.  Indeed this was the mentality and our way of life throughout the generations.

Have a wonderful Shabbos.

Shmita was chosen to reveal the lesson of Sinai as Rashi quotes at the beginning of our parsha.  Since agriculture was the mainstay of our economical existence it can be fulfilled only through complete self-sacrifice–thus Hashem expected absolute commitment.  So too the fulfillment, accomplishment and realization of doing the true Will of Hashem involves complete devotion and self-sacrifice.

Have a wonderful Shabbos.

Parshas Acharai – Shabbos HaGadol – Erev Pesach (5765)
by Mordechai Dolinsky

The sons of Aharon were punished for something for which the commandment was not yet given.  It was because they understood themselves that it shouldn’t have been done.  We are held responsible for all we comprehend on our own which is right or wrong.

This is perhaps the most important Shabbos of the year.  We receive spiritual gifts of understanding (hashpaos) for Pesach since it occurs in this week, which is the foundation of everything.  Perhaps this is the reason it is called Shabbos HaGadol.

Use every moment of Pesach for the purpose that it was given which is to grow and be inspired in Emuna.

Chag Kasher V’Sameach and have a wonderful Shabbos.

Chag HaPesach is our greatest source of spiritual nourishment for the year.  To derive the necessary benefit we must use this last week to prepare by studying the halachos and the medrashim about yetzias mitzrayim.

Parshas Metzora is very appropo since Moshe Rabeinu proclaimed “Ochain Nodah Hadovor”—the terrible affliction of the Egyptians upon us was attributed to the sin of Loshon Horah.  Likewise the Chazal enlightened us to the fact that the main cause of tzoraas is a result of loshon horah; lowering the esteem and causing any harm, physical or mental, or monetary loss to our fellow man.

Have a wonderful Shabbos.

The Kohain glances at the ‘negah’ and a week later must observe if the size has altered.  How nerve wracking to depend on the accuracy of his memory.  Maybe this is part of the ‘kapara’.

Shabbos HaChodesh; the obvious message is that from the beginning of the month we are showered from Heaven with chizuk and inspiration of the Yetzias Mitzrayim.  We also must use this period of time as a preparation for the great spiritual uplift of Chag HaPesach.

Have a wonderful Shabbos and a good Chodesh.

How significant today is the Chazal (Medrash Rabba 13:5) of how the ‘chazir’ who doesn’t chew his cud but displays his split hooves, as if cunningly and falsely declaring his purity and holiness.  So much of the ideas and ideals of our modern day culture and society which are accepted, condoned and even praised is truthfully wicked.  No, the old hog hasn’t given up—beware!

After the refreshing and rejuvenating uplift of the Torah we just received on Purim, rejoice with its true beauty!

Have a wonderful Shabbos.

Parshas Tzav – Purim (5765)
By Mordechai Dolinsky

The Medrash in our parsha 9-7 calls out that only the korban todah is forever.  This proclaims the supremacy of gratitude.  The miracle of Purim came about through the gratitude that even Achashverosh had to Mordechai.  I hope that we get the point.

A frelichen Purim wherever you are and a wonderful Shabbos.

Parshas Yisro 5761

Parshas Yisro 5761
By Mordechai Dolinsky
Yisro truly made a major contribution to Klal Yisroel, with his suggestion of an elaborate system of poiskim and morei hora’ah. One of the reasons he was named Yisro, was to commemorate this great act. A great difficulty is that his idea was such an obviously needed innovation. Why didn’t it occur to Moshe Rabeinu or to anyone else?
This matter of psak, determining the halacha is much more complex than what it seems on the surface. It is not just an issue of intellect and information as we find in the secular sense. There is a unique divine guidance that is “showered” on the posek, which he acquires through an intensive connection with Hashem.
Moshe Rabeinu knew that he was blessed with this unique framework and was instructed by Hashem to carry out this holy task as the morei hora’ah. How can he take the responsibility to delegate this awesome position, duty, and role. Now the obvious question arises; Where did Yisro get the insight that it was proper to propose this.
In the field of free will, and the area of understanding that the purpose of our existence is to be tested in the fulfillment of the will of Hashem, there is a very basic question. How are we to view acheinu bnei yisroel, our fellow Jews, which are born in locations that are far removed from any exposure to a Torah connection.  How can they be tested and held responsible? How do we understand their purpose of existence to be fulfilled?
For an explanation to this we must turn to one of the most important principles. Hashem our creator maintains a constant connection with every individual and is aware of their inner most thoughts and feelings. This individual, despite that he was born so far away, yet he still has the capacity to search and find Hashem; “where does this food come from, …my clothing, …my awesome body? Hashem where are you”? These thoughts might be for a fleeting second but they are very real and sincere.
The divine wheels of hasgacha pratis are then put into motion. Our far removed person from Torah is then  riding a bus on a business trip. A stranger (Rabbi) sitting besides him has just the right personality, and chemistry, and enlightens him. Indeed, this is a heavenly angel. Our friend has been given the tools, to work his way forward – to Torah. Hashem sends his sheluchim.
This very important foundation is reflected in a midrash on our sedra (27,2) “ Hashem said to Moshe, I am the one who has spoken and through my words has created the world. I am the one who draws one close or repels them. I am the one who drew Yisro close…”
Yisro was a recipient of this magnificent gift from Hashem. He was drawn close by the hand of Hashem threw his sheluchim, and had a tremendous clarity in this attribute of Hashem sending His messengers. It was this clarity that enabled Yisro to have the unique insight that Hashem can send his sheluchim to assist Moshe Rabeinu, and set up a complex of morei hora’ah.
Hashem, draw us near to you.
Have a wonderful Shabbos

Parshas Behar – Bechukosai (5762)

The Medrash in our Sedra (34:1) enlightens us to the marvelous trait of an individual harnessing his mental capacities to figure out how to give tzedaka to someone who is in need but does not want to receive.  This is surely inspiring for us, living in a generation of insensitivity.

There are so many major events surrounding us, and it is imperative that we have the interest to seek their proper interpretation.

Have a wonderful Shabbos.

Parshas Acharei – Kedoshim (5762)
by Mordechai Dolinsky

One of the opinions in Chazal of the sin of Aharon’s sons was that they engaged in the service having indulged in drinking wine.  The obvious difficulty is that the explicit commandment to refrain from drinking in service came afterward.

One of the most vital principles in our life’s purpose and fulfillment I heard from Rav Miller zt”l in the name of R’ Nissim Gaon, is that Hashem holds us responsible to keep what we understand with our own mental faculties.  This is considered the Will of Hashem, compatible to Torah MiSinai.  That accounts for the responsibility of doing right and keeping away from wrong before Matan Torah.  The sons of Aharon understood that it was improper to serve after having indulged in wine.  This responsibility for what we comprehend ourselves to be right is eternal.

Have a wonderful Shabbos.
