Parshas Chayai Sara (5767)
By Mordechai Dolinsky

The popular understanding of Rashi (23:1) is that Sara Imainu passed away from the shock of the mistaken information that Yitzchok was actually slaughtered.  However, from more careful examination it is clear that she was disturbed just from the idea of the “akaida” which obviously needs explanation.

Just as the ‘nisayon’ of Avraham is explained that the whole concept of slaughtering Yitzchok was so much to the contrary of how Hashem presented Himself as the epitome of chesed;  so too, to Sara  the idea was just too devastating.

This calls out for us the extreme importance that chesed is in the service of Hashem.

Have a wonderful Chodesh.

Lech Lecha; Hashem promises the fulfillment of the request will reap fruit for his own personal benefit.  Why does Hashem find it necessary to make this guaranty?  One explanation is that all the trials that Hashem presents to us are based on an in-depth knowledge of what presents for us a test.  Secondly, the realization that our source of all our materialistic needs must be fulfilled only from Hashem, is itself one of the greatest foundations of our faith.

Have a wonderful Shabbos.

Parshas Noach (5767)
by Mordechai Dolinsky

The pasuk (7:17) relates that Hashem closed the Ark.  Noach himself would have had no problem doing this.  The significance of relating that this was from Hashem was accomplished by Hashem through lions and bears attacking those who wished to destroy the Ark, something which was very unusual.  This is another outstanding demonstration of the presence and the control of Hashem presenting a source of emuna for those who are seeking.

Simchas Torah (5767)

One of the deepest ideas of all of our hashkafos is that Hashem and the Torah are one and the absolute way to cling to Hashem is to attach oneself to Hashem’s Torah.  We see a realization of this deep concept by the celebration of all Clal Yisroel of simchas Torah.  This is really an invitation by Hashem to
celebrate with Himself.

Have a wonderful Yom Tov. And Shabbos.

Yom Kippur (5767)
by Mordechai Dolinsky

We generally associate the vidui recited on Yom Kippur to be connected with the various tefilos of Shmone Esreh.  The truth is that the power of Yom Kippur is not necessarily related to the davening. Yom Kippur is a time zone; a specific parameter of time that from the very moment it is ushered in until its final moment, it is an agent that together with tshuva can rid us of our soul stains from transgressions.  It can and should be used out to its utmost and any moment that we recall something which requires forgiveness use your Yom Kippur for this.

A gmar chasimah tova to all and a wonderful year to all Klal Yisroel.

Parshas Ha’azinu — Shabbos Shuva (5767)
by Mordechai Dolinsky

How inspiring! The first Shabbos of 5767 and Shabbos Shuva, designated for returning to Hashem and for repentance.

The Medrash (10:1) relates the phenomenon of the multitudes attraction to a specific individual as a source of learning Torah from him, is a direct correlation of that individual’s own attentiveness to his own Torah mentor.

So deep and rich with implication; our own sincere significant spiritual input brings concrete related substantial positive consequences.

Have a wonderful, uplifting and inspirational Shabbos and a g’mar chasima tova.

Parshas Ki Savo (5766)

It is imperative to appeal for Divine assistance for understanding and having the true insight as to what is expected of us in this present period of time, for our Chodesh Elul avoda, in preparation for Rosh Hashana. The fact that this constantly changes is one of the most important foundations of life.

To a large degree we are judged on our general principles, goals and values. This can be the thought behind the Medrash in our sedra that for the reward of attending the Bais Medrash in this world, you will be rewarded to do so in Olam Haba. Teshuva shouts our value system and therefore has unique significance in Elul.

Have a wonderful Shabbos, a successful Elul and a wonderful New Year.

We must appeal and cry to Hashem to enlighten us as to what exactly He expects of us and this very special time.
